Alentejo - Évora

ÉVORA, cidade histórica no coração do Alentejo, é herdeira de um rico e
variado património cultural, construído e preservado ao longo do tempo.
Fundada (ou refundada) pelo povo romano e por este denominada
Ebora Liberalitas Iulia, a cidade foi a praça-forte que alicerçou, no Além-Tejo,
a formação do novo reino de Portugal durante a Reconquista cristã peninsular
do séc. XII. Após a consolidação das fronteiras com Castela, vários reis aqui
fixaram a sua corte, particularmente na período das descobertas marítimas.
O património histórico e artístico que hoje se preserva na cidade resultou em
boa medida dessa longa permanência da corte. O conjunto monumental
que esses tempos áureos legaram à cidade, em harmonia com o tecido urbano
de cariz popular, estão na base da classificação de Évora como Património
Cultural da Humanidade, desde 1986.
ÉVORA, a historic city in the heart of Alentejo, is heir to a rich and varied cultural heritage, built and preserved over time. Founded (or refounded) by the Roman people and called Ebora Liberalitas Iulia by them, the city was the stronghold that laid the foundation, beyond the Tagus, for the formation of the new kingdom of Portugal during the Christian Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula in the 12th century. After the borders with Castile were consolidated, several kings set their courts here, particularly during the period of maritime discoveries. The historical and artistic heritage that is preserved in the city today largely resulted from this long presence of the royal court. The monumental ensemble that these golden times left to the city, in harmony with the popular urban fabric, forms the basis for Évora's classification as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1986.
