| According to legend, the toponym "Portagem" comes from the Jews expelled from Spain by the Catholic Monarchs, who, to enter Portugal via the old bridge still existing in this location, paid the "toll". The Sever River forms a natural pool here, between two bridges, ideal for pleasant swims. There is even the Portagem Leisure Centre next to it, located on the opposite side of the current picnic area, possessing various infrastructures such as a swimming pool, multi-sports court, children's playground and a fitness circuit, among other assets. Portagem is also characterized by its most notable monument: the granite Old Bridge, commonly called the Roman Bridge. |
